West Georgia police chief, Gene Allmond has resigned and Patrolman John Brooks has been terminated, after bodycam footage shows the pair engaging in conversation and using racial slurs liberally throughout their dialogue. The announcement came from Buddy Walker, the Assistant to Hamilton Mayor Julie Brown.
The pair were engaged in conversation regarding the upcoming Black Lives Matters protests the two were preparing for and were unaware that the exchange was being recorded on Officer Brooks' bodycam. The N word was used several times throughout the conversation and at one point Officer Brooks remarked that "If I had to F**k a N***er" that he preferred Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms over former gubernatorial candidate, Stacey Abrams.
However, the conversation did not stop there; they moved on to the topic of slavery. "For the most part, it seems to me like they furnished them a house to live in.They furnished them clothes to put on their back. They furnished them food to put on their table and all they had to do was f***ing work. And now we give 'em all those things and don't have to f***ing work," one of the men said on the video. After being made aware of the incident city officials took swift action, advising both parties that if they did not resign that they would be terminated.
Hamilton Mayor Pro-Tempo-re Ransom Farley stumbled upon the video footage and made other city officials aware of it. Farley, who is Black and openly gay, was particularly stunned by the incident, remarking, "It hurts, when you think you know somebody and you don't."
City attorney Ron Iddins remarked "It was determined that the two officers involved needed to no longer work for the City of Hamilton,". According to Iddins, "A bodycam that was used by the city was being inspected because we had been informed that the bodycam did not work. But when it was looked at, it was determined that the bodycam actually had full memory of video,".
Chief Allman resigned on Monday. Officer Brooks was asked to turn his gear in by Wednesday, when he did not he was terminated. Both men declined to comment on the incident.
